Periodontics is a sub-specialty or branch of dentistry concerned with removing plaque and tartar from the teeth. This plaque and tartar can cause gum disease, otherwise known as periodontal disease. The specialty of periodontics has many branches that each focus on removing plaque and tartar from specific areas of the mouth (i.e., teeth, gums, or jaw). Here are the main branches of dentistry periodontics:
Gingival Diseases Treatment
Gingivitis is the swelling of the gums contributed by buildup of plaque around the gum line. Plaque appears as a sticky film composed of bacteria and food particles that forms on teeth above or beneath the gum line when they are not brushed regularly and cleaned properly. In turn, bacteria in plaque release toxins which are irritative to the gums, leading to swollen, red, and bleeding conditions. Fortunately, tooth and plaque removal procedures are available for gingival disease treatment.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Periodontics is often a specialty of dentistry that focuses on diagnosing, preventing, and treating dental problems affecting the supporting structures of the teeth, including the gums and bones. A periodontist is a dentist who has completed postgraduate training in diagnosing and treating diseases affecting the soft tissues around our teeth.
Oral Hygiene
Oral Hygiene involves maintaining healthy teeth, gums and tongue through regular brushing and flossing, as well as by removing any plaque buildup between the teeth using special dental instruments. This is important because plaque that remains on the surface of the teeth can harden into tartar if not removed regularly. Tartar buildup can lead to periodontal disease, which can cause tooth loss if left untreated.
Preventive Dentistry
Preventive Dentistry focuses on preventing further decay or damage to existing teeth by providing regular checkups every six months to notice any problem early before it worsens, allowing for less invasive treatment options if possible.
