Understanding the Basics of Periodontial Pockets and How They Impact Your Oral Health
  1. Long-term Effects of Periodontal Pockets

Periodontal pockets are a gum ailment that affects how the gums sit next to the base of the tooth. Typically, our gums sit tightly on either side of the lower portion of each tooth, however, this gum tissue can recede away from the tooth and eventually detach from the tooth.

If this happens, there is a high likelihood you are experiencing periodontal pockets. Periodontal pockets generally form because of poor oral health. Bacteria in the mouth continuously grows, and if left unchecked, can cause oral problems like tooth decay and gum disease. In the case of periodontal pockets, bacteria settle near the base of the tooth where the gum is attached and irritates the gum.

Long-term Effects of Periodontal Pockets

Since periodontal pockets are an indication of poor oral hygiene, people suffering from them are at risk for gum disease. When the bacteria affecting the gums are left to grow, it can harden and form plaque which will inflame the gums. Once the gums become inflamed, the gums are afflicted with gingivitis. Most people can make a recovery from gingivitis with the proper medical care. However, it can become a serious problem if it progresses to further stages.

Once gingivitis progresses, it can turn into periodontitis. Periodontitis is an aggressive form of gum disease characterized by the decay of teeth and recession of the gums. With enough time, it is possible to lose teeth and get serious infections in the gums from periodontitis.

It is possible to identify periodontal pockets with a quick look in the mirror, but it is always important to visit our office regularly so that we can evaluate the health of your gums and catch early signs of gum disease before it becomes worse. If you’re interested in learning more about periodontal pockets or you are seeking help to cure your periodontal pockets, gives us a call and we will be happy to set a time for a visit.
