Genetics and Anatomy
Genetics may be the culprit for most patients. If you have inherited a large jaw, small teeth, or a short upper lip, your smile may appear gummy.
When your top jaw does not align well with your bottom jaw, you may have a bad bite. This is a hereditary condition that can cause many issues ranging from crooked teeth to a gummy smile. Another condition known as hereditary gingival fibromatosis is also a possibility, but it is rather rare.
Excess Gum Tissue
Having too much gum tissue is also a common cause of a gummy smile. When permanent teeth sprout, sometimes, there is an overgrowth of gum tissue that covers the front teeth further than required. At times, however, swelling due to a gum infection may also make it seem like you have excess gum tissue.
Poor Dental Hygiene
When plaque forms on your teeth, it can seep under your gums and cause them to become inflamed or enlarged. Swollen gums can cover more of your teeth to make your smile appear gummy. People with braces may also get gummy smiles if they neglect dental hygiene. It is particularly difficult to brush or floss while wearing braces, which may cause bacteria buildup near the gums.
